Presidio and Pacific Heights

The Presidio circa 1890

The Presidio served initially as a military post for Spain and then Mexico for 26 years. In 1848 it became a U.S. Army post, protecting commerce and trade, and playing a logistical role in every major U.S. military conflict until 1994, when it became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
