Gas Lamps on Montgomery Street, c. 1880
Viewing toward Market Street, the Palace Hotel, completed in 1876, was the largest hotel west of the Mississippi. Street lamps, originally oil-burning and privately funded, were first installed in the City in1850 by James Crooks. These were replaced by gas lighting, introduced in 1854 by the “San Francisco Gas Company.”
